Northern Exposure 2024

April 12-14, 2024
UNIVERSITY OF MINNESOTA, EAST BANK

Northern Exposure 2024 is set for Friday, April 12 – Sunday, April 14 at the University of Minnesota’s Hubbard School of Journalism and Mass Communication in Murphy Hall on the East Bank of the Mississippi River in Minneapolis.

Northern Exposure is an anything-but-the-same-old conference to talk photography, video and storytelling. For the last several years, photojournalists have shaped the way we receive news about the pandemic, unrest, social justice and more. It hasn’t always been easy, but it’s been important. Let’s gather to learn from each other and inspire one another.

Join us on Friday for a student-focused program (everyone is welcome to attend) with a Friday night get-together open to anyone. On Saturday there will be great keynote speakers and breakout sessions with optional dinner options (on your own), and a partial day Sunday with more keynote speakers and workshops.

A light breakfast is provided each day and lunch is provided on Friday and Saturday, included in your registration. Pre-registered attendees will receive a t-shirt. (Day-of registrations may only receive a t-shirt if available).

Early Bird Pricing: $60/pros and $15/students, Friday breakfast and boxed lunch, Saturday breakfast and lunch, Sunday breakfast, and a t-shirt. Saturday only, $50, Sunday only, $25. Students, Friday only, $10.

After March 1: $75/pros and $20/students, Friday breakfast and boxed lunch, Saturday breakfast and lunch, Sunday breakfast, and a t-shirt. Saturday only, $50, Sunday only, $25.

On Site Registration (April 12-14): $75/pros and $20/students, Friday breakfast and boxed lunch, Saturday breakfast and lunch, Sunday breakfast. Saturday only, $50, Sunday only, $25. T-shirts available as inventory allows.

Carol Guzy, Kent Nishimura and Tara Pixley

We’re happy to announce our first keynote speakers, Carol Guzy, Kent Nishimura and Tara Pixley. Guzy is a four-time Pulitzer Prize winning photojournalist and a three-time NPPA Photographer of the Year. She specializes on long-form documentary human interest projects and news stories, both domestic and international. Nishimura is a photographer based in Washington, DC., most recently as a photographer with the Los Angeles Times, covering Washington, and much of the Eastern Seaboard. Pixley is a queer, Jamaican-American visual journalist and Assistant Professor of Journalism at Temple University. Her filmic and photographic work intersect with her scholarship and advocacy, each using visual media to frame race, gender, climate futures, LGBTQ+ and immigrant communities through a liberation lens.

But that’s not all! Hear from Mike Davis, Dave LaBelle, Richard Tsong-Taatarii, Katie Rausch, Jaida Grey Eagle, McKenna Ewen and more. Our list of speakers continues to grow. Check them out here.
